Actress, Yvonne Craig, best known for her work as Batgirl in the 1960’s “Batman” TV series, died yesterday in her home in the Pacific Palisades following a prolonged battle with cancer.
Ms. Craig started her career as a dancer in The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and used that training to perform her own stunts on the “Batman” TV series.
Craig also played the memorable green Orion Slave Girl, Martha, in the third season of the original “Star Trek” and she starred in two movies opposite Elvis Presley – “It Happened at the World’s Fair” and “Kissin’ Cousins.”
As a longtime fan of the original “Batman” TV series, I will always remember her opposite Burt Ward and Adam West in the series third season.
“I really didn’t think we were making Gone With the Wind,” she said. “Just an episodic TV series that would be over when it was over and then it would never rerun again.
“I meet women today who tell me that they grew up viewing Batgirl as an important role model. If they choose to know me in that context, well, I’ll take it.”
She was 78.
